Share your exploration and learning around the rich themes of Matariki with this simple & beautiful mini diorama!

 

This activity is best completed over the space of a week to allow you to introduce 1 page at a time thoroughly discuss & explore the keywords & concepts before moving on to the next one…

Make the project as big or a small as you like – print & enlarge the sheets on to A3 card and embellish with paint, colour and glitter for a show stopping result!

This project comes complete with step by step photographic instructions, and after cutting out is simply assembled using just 2 staples.

 

The complete & assembled diorama includes:

  • A background sheet showing the Matariki constellation, marama the moon & kites with appropriate keywords to investigate. *Choose from options with Māori/English keywords only to allow the children to add their own notes or pictures, plus a black sky version
  • The background layer includes a Matariki fact sheet that glues onto the reverse side to share information about this special annual event and the constellation itself
  • The middle layer includes images and keywords around the topics of harvest, planting, Papatūānuku, whānau, celebration, feasting & whakapapa (genealogy) *Also included are versions without illustrations and/or keywords to allow you to adapt this page to suit the needs of your class
  • The front layer provides a space for recording some reflections on the year that’s been and to allow your students to set some new goals! *The front title page includes a fold down flap to create a more private section for recording personal reflections/goals.
